In the second episode of The Fundadores Lounge, I sat down with someone who has spent his life quietly reshaping a global industry from the inside out.
My guest is Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges, CEO of The Hong Kong Jockey Club. Under his leadership, Hong Kong has become a global center of thoroughbred racing, with sports betting systems that operate at the scale of major stock exchanges, while also serving as one of Asia’s largest charitable forces.
Winfried has spent his career combining strategy, integrity, and long-term social impact. He has helped build equestrian venues for the Beijing Olympics and Asian Games, created systems to curb illegal betting operators, opened up a new cross-border equestrian ecosystem with the Chinese Mainland, and led a charity platform that touches almost every part of Hong Kong life—from education and youth to positive aging and dignified end-of-life care.
Top Takeaways:
- How a clear 5–10 year plan, the right team, and aligned rewards turned Hong Kong into a global racing leader
- Why honesty, strong compliance, and good tech are the real long-term advantages in tightly regulated industries
- What it took to build Conghua and create a stable, two-way racing system between Hong Kong and Mainland China
- How HKJC uses both its charity work and its data to create social impact at scale and keep the public’s trust
